「Once in a Lifetime」（ワンス・イン・ア・ライフタイム）はアメリカのニュー・ウェイヴ・バンド、Talking Heads（トーキング・ヘッズ）がブライアン・イーノと共同制作した楽曲。1981年1月、4作目のスタジオ・アルバム『Remain in Light』（1980年）からの先行シングルとしてサイアー・レコードより発売された。
イーノとバンドは、フェラ・クティなどアフロビートの影響を受けた長時間のジャム・セッションを基に楽曲を構築。デヴィッド・バーンのボーカルは説教を行う牧師に着想を得ており、歌詞は実存的危機や無意識をテーマにしている。ミュージック・ビデオはバーンとトニー・バジルが監督し、宗教的儀式の映像に合わせてバーンが奇妙な動きを見せる内容となっている。
2023年にはイギリスでプラチナ認定を受けた。1984年のコンサート映画『Stop Making Sense』からのライブ版は1986年にビルボード・ホット100にランクイン。NPRは20世紀のアメリカ音楽100選に、ロックの殿堂は「ロックを形作った500曲」に選出。『ローリング・ストーン』誌は2021年版「史上最高の500曲」で28位に、ミュージック・ビデオを81位に位置付けた。
制作
アルバム『Remain in Light』の他曲と同様に、ジャムを録音し、その中から良い部分を抽出して繰り返し演奏する方法で制作。ロバート・パーマーがギターとパーカッションで参加。初期にはコード進行がなく「トランス」的な構成に苦戦したが、イーノがメロディを口ずさみ、ジェリー・ハリスンがシンセ・アルペジオとヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド風のオルガンを加えて完成した。
ティナ・ウェイマスは、クリス・フランツの掛け声をもとにベースラインを作成。イーノは1拍目の音を省くよう提案し再録音させた。
歌詞
説教のようなコール＆レスポンス形式で、美しい家、美しい妻、大きな車を持つ生活を描きつつ、その現実性や経緯を疑問視する。バーンは「無意識のまま人生を進めてしまうこと」をテーマと語った。
ミュージック・ビデオ
バーンがスーツと蝶ネクタイ姿で白い部屋に立ち、宗教儀式の映像と合成された背景の中で痙攣的な動きを見せる。トニー・バジルがアーカイブ映像を元に振付を支援。低予算で制作されたが独特の存在感を放った。
