「Captain Jack」（キャプテン・ジャック）は、ビリー・ジョエルが1973年に発表したアルバム『Piano Man』の最後を飾る楽曲である。1981年のライブ・アルバム『Songs in the Attic』にもライブ版が収録されている。
1972年4月15日、フィラデルフィアのWMMR局によるシグマ・スタジオでのライブ・ラジオ・コンサートで披露された演奏と、その後のラジオでの頻繁なオンエアが、ジョエルをコロムビア・レコードを含む大手レコード会社の注目を集めるきっかけとなった。ジョエルは1973年にコロムビアと契約を結ぶこととなった。
作曲
ジョエルが「Captain Jack」を書いたのは1971年末、ロングアイランドのオイスター・ベイにある自宅アパートで窓の外を眺めながらインスピレーションを探していた時であった。通りの向かいに住宅プロジェクトがあり、郊外のティーンエイジャーたちがそこへ行き、「キャプテン・ジャック」と呼ばれる売人からヘロインを手に入れる様子を観察したことがきっかけとなった。1974年、ジョエルはジョン・カロドナーとの会話の中で「ニューヨーク郊外から抜け出すことについての歌なんだ。でも旅をする中で、同じような郊外は国中どこにでもあると気づいた。この曲はある意味で残酷だけど、時には残酷で人を不快にさせることも大事だ。それで人々は気を引き締めるから」と語っている。
ジョエルによれば、この曲は反ドラッグソングである。彼は「裕福なティーンエイジャーの人生がそんなにひどいものなのか？どうしてヘロインを打たなきゃいけないんだ？この曲は、俺が考える哀れな負け犬のライフスタイルについての歌なんだ。『この曲はドラッグや自慰行為を助長している』なんて言われることもあるけど、違う違う。よく聴いてみろ。この男は負け犬なんだ」と説明している。さらに『Songs in the Attic』のライナーノーツでも「多くの友人たちがロングアイランドの土の下に埋められた。ベトナムで死ななかったとしても、近代化学の奇跡が彼らを殺した」と改めて強調している。
