　「The Soul Cages」（ザ・ソウル・ケージズ）はイギリスのミュージシャン、スティングの楽曲。この曲は1991年1月21日にリリースされたスティングのソロ3枚目のフルアルバムである『ザ・ソウル・ケージズ』に収録された。またこの曲はアルバムからの3枚目のシングルとしてもリリースされた。

歌詞の意味

漁師＝海の王

歌詞に出てくる”the fisherman“は固有名詞ではなく、普通名詞だが、この歌詞の中では唯一無二の存在で、固有名詞的に機能しているキャラクターである。（村上春樹の『世界の終わり』に出てくる登場人物、門番、大佐みたいなもの。）

漁師はケージの中に死者の魂を閉じ込め、自らを海の王と嘯く霊的・寓話的な存在である。

主人公の少年は生きている？

The boy child is locked in the fisherman’s yard
少年は漁師の作業場に（生身のまま）閉じ込められている

この歌詞に出てくる主人公の少年は生きている。主人公がもしケージに囚われている魂のひとつなら、賭けで漁師が以下のような条件を出すのはおかしい。

If you lose a wager with the king of the sea
もしお前が海の王（である俺）との賭けに負けたら
You’ll spend the rest of forever in the cage with me’
永遠に俺の支配のもと、ケージの中で囚われ続けることになるぞ」

主人公は生身の人間で、魂になった父を解放するために漁師のもとに来て、生きたまま漁師に捕らえられ、閉じ込められていると考えるとしっくりくる。

またこのストーリーを素直に解釈すれば、少年は漁師との賭けに勝ち、父の魂を解放し、漁師は死に、主人公は夢の中で解放された父と「魂の島」へ旅立つという救済の物語として読めるが、深読みすると、「夢を見る」というラストは、少年が賭けに負けて魂になって、ケージの中に入れられた状態で夢を見ているとも解釈できる。（魂の存在になると常に夢を見ているような状態になるという解釈）
