「オール・ディス・タイム」はイギリスのミュージシャン、スティングの楽曲。
この曲は、1990年12月31日にシングルとしてリリースされ、スティングの3枚目のスタジオアルバム『ソウル・ケージ』(The Soul Cages)に収録された。
解釈
スティングの自伝？
『ソウル・ケージ』はアルバム全体を通して、父親の死を受けたスティングの深い個人的な喪失感を中心に作詞されている。この曲もスティングの父親の死について言及しているが、自伝ではなく、曲の語り手(主人公)を少年ビリーに据えて、父親の死に際してカトリックの儀式を受ける代わりに海に埋葬したいと願う気持ちを歌っている。
「ビリーの父親は造船所の事故で負傷していて、2人の司祭が臨終の床にいる。ビリーは儀式が行われることを望んでいない。父親を連れて海に埋葬したいんだ」とスティングはQマガジンで語った。
「父の死についての曲だからレコードとしてはかなり暗いけど、この曲では、このかなり陽気な曲によって歌詞が引き立てられている。暗いテーマと明るい音楽を組み合わせることは、僕がとても好きなことなんだ。いや、 歌詞は現実離れしたものじゃないけど、フェリー、司祭、馬など、僕が育った故郷のイメージをそのまま再現したものだよ。実際にはない場所だけど、僕の夢の風景だ」
架空の人物ビリーは『ソウル・ケージ』のオープニング曲「アイランド・オブ・ソウルズ」の歌詞でも言及されている。
針の穴って何の話？

「針の穴にはまる太った人間よりも貧しい人間になる方が良い」
新約聖書『ルカによる福音書』18章25節でイエスが発した言葉「金持ちが神の国に入るよりも、ラクダが針の穴を通るほうが簡単だ」(“it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God”)を、この歌詞に登場する神父が改変して儀式の中で口にしているシーン。
チャールズ・マッケイからの引用？
