曲情報
「ドント・スタンド・ソー・クロース・トゥ・ミー」はイギリスのロックバンド、ポリスのヒット曲で、1980年9月に3枚目のスタジオアルバム『ゼニヤッタ・モンダッタ』のリードシングルとしてリリースされた。
解釈
「ナボコフの本に出てくる老人のように」という歌詞は、似たようなテーマを扱っているウラジミール・ナボコフの小説『ロリータ』 (1955年)のこと。 この歌詞は「shake and cough」をナボコフと韻を踏んでいると批判された。スティングは「そのひどい、ひどい韻のテクニックを何度か使ったことがある」と答えた。
スティングはポリスに加入する前は英語教師として働いていた。彼はこの曲のストーリー展開を「先生、開いたページ、処女、車内でのレイプ、そしてクビ」と表現した。
スティングのライブDVD『all this time』では、「経験じゃなくて創作だよ！」と述べている。
